Here's how it is:
After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and hundreds of new Earths were terraformed and colonized. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying.

Persephone (3 sub-boards) Persephone is a popular planet for drifters and workers alike. Come here to find a ship to board or, if you already have that, this planet offers a lot of odd jobs...but at least they're payin' jobs.
Sihnon Together with Londinium, Sihnon is one of the two Major Planets. It is inhabited primarily by colonists from China. The planet is highly sophisticated and technologically advanced. It is also Inara Serra's home planet. This is where the Companion Guild will be located.
Ariel (1 sub-board) Ariel is home to one of the best medical facilities in the 'verse, St. Lucy.

Bernadette Settlers generally come here for basic needs and supplies while they're on the ground. There are rumors of an underground slavery-ring here, too.

Osiris Alliance Stronghold; not many browncoats venture here. The high court and University of Osiris are stationed on this planet.

Outer Planets and Moons
Whitefall Whitefall is the fourth moon of Athens, a large percentage of which is owned by a woman named Patience. Whitefall is said to not be civilization "in the strictest sense."
Hera This planet is most well-known for the infamous battle that took place at Serenity Valley, where the Alliance defeated the Independents and won the war.
Miranda Miranda is located beyond Reaver territory. Only the very foolish or the very brave venture here.

Haven Haven is a mining planet which is often used as a hiding place for those running from the law (for a fee) and is where some smugglers or criminals decide to settle down. This is also the home of Shepherd Book

Jiangyin Jiangyin is a border planet located 3 weeks away from Persephone, and also nearby Greenleaf. Until The Uprising, Alliance used to uphold the law here. Not anymore...

Higgins' Moon Higgins' Moon is a moon where the primary commercial activity is mud mining which is performed by indentured workers called "mudders". The mud is exported offworld and used in the manufacturing of ceramic components. The bulk of the population are impoverished and/or indentured workers. The folk hero, Jayne, is said to of helped the mudders during some rough times.

Greenleaf (1 sub-board) An Alliance planet until The Uprising regained control over the border. Located at times 10 hours away from Jiangyin.
St. Albans One of the coldest planets in the 'verse, St. Albans' terrain is almost entirely mountainous. But what really makes St. Albans unpleasant is the gorram weather, for it snows almost continually.
Beaumonde (1 sub-board) This heavily industrialized planet is the manufacturing hub of the system. Its cities are surrounded by factories that produce everything from computer parts to ceramic dishware. Outside the cities, the atmosphere improves dramatically. Ranchers and farmers manage to make a decent living supplying the cities and ships going off-world.
