If your character has been changed to "Diseased" status, it's simply because you've been away for too long [one month without logging in]. Posting in the 'absenses' board and telling admin ahead of time will prevent this happening to you.
There is a sickness going 'round the 'Verse. People affected start exhibiting flu-like symptoms, and then very quickly fall into a coma. There's no idea as to the cause of this or how to treat it; all that's known is it's an infection that attacks the brain. Most doctors just keep the patient in the ICU, all tubed up and hoping they will wake up.
You [your character] fell ill. You were dropped off at St. Lucy's or on-planet somewhere by your crew [or whoever was around at the time]. If dropped on-planet, your character was then sent to St. Lucy's by a generous passer-by. In any case, all 'diseased' characters end up here. Depending on how kind your crew was or was not...your character may or may not have been looted. The info will be provided to you when you get back.
When you come back to the 'Verse, you MUST post your first return post at St. Lucy's. Your character will wake up in an unfamiliar bed in a two-person room. The bed next to yours may or may not be occupied [up to you] and the door is always closed. There are feeding tubes, waste tubes, and an IV connected to your body as well as monitors for heart rate and brain activity. You are wearing only a flimsy hospital gown and a thin blanket. Your head will feel fuzzy, you may have some memory loss, and your body will have lost some weight. You will be weak.
Your awakening will set off the monitor for brain activity, and a nurse will soon come in. An admin will play out the nurse and they will discharge you. Although the discharge itself will only take a couple of posts, it will in-game be a period of rehab. How long you are missing from the site determines how long your rehab is. Each week you are missing after your character becomes 'diseased' equals one week of rehab required. The reason for this is that the longer a person is in a 'diseased' coma, the more they'll need to relearn when they awaken...right down to tying their shoes.
Then you're free to do whatever. Wave the crew you belonged to to come pick you up, find a new crew, whatever. And don't get sick again ;]
Update!
Because there have been so many returning to us, and because I have a life and several other characters, I've been having a hard time staying on top of the nurse NPC. Therefore, I've decided that every character that returns will be immediately changed from "diseased" to "drifter" status. They were still be required to post in St. Lucy's as waking up, but they do not have to wait on a nurse. They are free to then go wherever they like on the site. The post in St. Lucy's is just a way to roleplay the character's return to the waking world and to decide where to go next. Eventually, I plan on replying to every post, but it will be understood as having taken place before anything else you do on the site after your return. If that makes sense.
Here's what it means for you in-game:
