Here's how it is:
After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and hundreds of new Earths were terraformed and colonized. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying.

Things did seem to be calmer now-- not that Jove had been around for all the ruckus and family squabbling between the crew of this ship. But, you put a bunch of people in a small space and there was bound to be some kind of sparks flying in various shapes and forms. Jove liked to steer clear of that nowdays. Though, seeing it made her miss the old crew. They hadn't been the best bunch of crazies to work with-- but they'd been pretty fun at times. Busying herself over by the sink, Jove didn't notice the small smirk curling up the corner of her lip in remembrance. Still, that was the then, this is the now.
Upon the arrival of the tall First Mate, the businesswoman had peered around, giving him a quick nod as he'd looked over each of those present in succession. Just Jove being polite in a room of people she didn't really know. At his prompt, and the younger lad's quick exit from the room, Jove merely looked towards the only person really left. That was the quiet guy at the table. She'd exchange a glance with him before her miss-matched eyes returned to the first mate.
"Looks like. Dunno what's goin' on meself, but I wasn't involved. Way I see it, though, long as no one's 'urt or dead as a result, it can't've been too bad."
Jove only really knew the bare basics of what was going on around here-- all a mere passenger should know. Her own planning wasn't to be here for the longhaul. This was just supposed to be a trip between one place and the other. Still, while she was here-- and providing that she'd paid up-front for this little stint across the 'Verse-- if her assistance was required for something or another; even if it was her services as a shrewd businesswoman, Jove wouldn't exactly turn them down on it. She wouldn't work for free-- but who in the 'Verse would? At the moment, though, she'd just keep to being a passenger.
Her cup was washed out and refilled before ankle boots clopped over to pull out a chair and sit. One sip had brought a bitter expression to her face a moment as it screwed up. Maybe she'd better empty some of her 'finer' things into the cupboards. All sneaky-like of course. Don't wanna appear charitable. Might ruin her image. Her bowler was set on the tabletop beside her, fingers running around the rim as she glanced over to the quiet bloke. Jove simply gave a friendly smile and a nod.
As for the First Mate, she didn't envy his job. Leadership-- however temporary or permanent it was-- was never a fun choice for her. Not much of a follower in her time-- but with the wits to learn how to, of course-- but the worst thing she could ever have to do was try and keep a crew together. Jove held a lot of respect for those that did. And did it well. Hence why she'd gotten on so well with her last Captain-- Lord rest her soul.

Ben had noticed Roxanne coming back in and going to her brother. He looked back for a second but somehow the two kids didn't react like he expected them. He had expected more hugs and kisses but instead Roxanne just sat next to her brother and put her head on his shoulder. Ben figured that what happened in town must've been really tough on her, and from the looks of it she had been crying as well.
When he turned back Ben noticed another young man had entered his ship, who appeared to be seeking passage. Normally the Orlando wouldn't take any passengers, but since they were heading to Beaumonde for a vacation Ben figured it couldn't hurt this time. And since Roxanne was in no state to talk to their would-be passenger, Ben decided to do it himself.
"Tell you what Ling." Ben said. "Why don't you think it over for a moment, and you tell me your answer in a minute."
Ben walked over to the young man that was seeking passage and gave him a smile. He had heard his compliment about the ships and it always did a captain good to hear people talk well about his ship.
"Indeed, Fireflies are the best." Ben said. "But mine is superior. My name is Ben, I'm the captain of this boat. Who do I have the pleasure of talking to?"

Alec hadn’t known that they were looking to hire. Roxie had left that bit out apparently. ”Well I guess we can see how it goes and how we all like each other. Don’t want to go causing trouble.” He grinned a mischievous grin. ”Except for my sister of course.” Alec always had something up his sleeve to torture his sister. It’s how siblings worked.
As other people began to arrive, Alec settled back a moment. He walked a little ways over to the stairs and sat down as he waited for Ben to stop being busy or Roxie came around. He didn’t have to wait long though before his sister came over and landed next to him. Once she found her way to her favorite spot to curl up, Alec rubbed his palm in big strides along her back. She looked like a wreck but hoped she’d be better now.
He drew in a deep breath and contorted his face in thought. ”Well the woman seems to be a medic of some sort and your captain is trying to hire her. This other fella just got here and wants passage. And the captain I think wants me to work as a mechanic.” He slipped that sly comment in there in reference to Roxie not mentioning anything to him. ”Which you could have prepared me for beforehand.”

Roxanne was slow to get back to the ship, but steady if enough. It had been a long talk with Nathaniel’s family. Her eyes were puffy and slightly red from all the crying she had done with his mother. She no longer cried, but rather felt relieved. Now that she had been able to see them and give them back Nathaniel’s things she felt loads better. She had promised to write them more often though and send waves every few months. They said she didn’t have to, wasn’t obliged, but she wanted to. Even if in the future she moved on and got married, she still would keep in touch.
She returned with only a bag of things she wanted to keep. Some letters they had written to each other and pictures. His parents also wanted her to keep his dog tags and the ring. The ring found its usual place back on her right hand and the chain was around her neck.
After she had walked about forty minutes, Roxanne caught sight of the Orlando. Once within a few feet of the ship, she noticed Ben and a couple other people she didn’t know standing in the bay. She walked up the plank and nodded to Ben before she caught site of her brother. Roxanne set the bag of paper items with the bags she knew to be her brothers and went to sit next to him. She immediately found a way to get under his arm and curl against his chest. Her eyes didn’t leave the captain and two new comers though. ”What’s up there?” She didn’t bother to ask how he was or how it went with Ben. She’d ask him that later when she helped him settle in.

Yeah, the plot was definitely much heavier.
And I seem to recall reading somewhere that Joss based Serenity off the plot summary for the intended second season of Firefly - which, if true, is rather interesting.

I dunno. I kinda liked the film for all it's 'we might all die and this is going to be tragic as hell'-ness. The series was great for other reasons-- but it was a series and not a film. So there didn't have to be all of that Alliance creating Reavers bit all thrown in.
Also another good point; the series was good for different reasons than the movie was good.
They didn't need to "up the ante", as it were, for the individual episodes, because tension wasn't what the audience was looking for.
I think audience expectation is completely different when they're coming into a movie, as apposed to watching an episode of a TV show.
