Kara’s jaw tightens, her fists balled quickly as she glared at the young man. His choice put not just herself but her own family in danger. Now that she had accepted this children, made a promise to this boy… It was time for her to live up to her own words though she could already tell this wasn’t going to end well for the ship. “Now you listen, I am only gonna say this once.” She didn’t hide the fire behind her eyes, or the anger that coated her voice. This ship has more people on it other then you and yours. I have me and mine on here and I ain’t gonna lose her because you can’t keep your story straight before you get on a ship.”
Her arms remained stiff at her sides, all the captain want wanted to do was deck this child. “Now I made ya’ promise ta’ keep you and yours safe. I am not goin back on that. But you are going to be double timing it around here. So are they.” She pointed over her shoulder at the twins. “I’m gonna ta’ have ta’ pass up good jobs ta’ keep ya’ safe.” Reaching into her back pocket she pulled out a list of ship parts and held it out for him to take. “Your first job after we leave the core. I am not gonna let anythin’ happen to them if I can help it.”
That’s when she did something out of character she grabbed Dan by the back of his neck and pulled him in for a quick stiff hug that one would expect more from a brother, or step father than from a woman that appear as gently as her. She didn’t think twice about it however. “I expect them on their best behavior.”
Without another word Kara marched back up into the cockpit and leaned on the panel next to Henry’s chair. “Someone is planning on trackin us. They aim to take the kids, I need you up there earning your keep ta’day.. I have no idea what they are going to be throwing at us. I can’t read this one… If it were me…” Her eyes flickered across the panels. “How long before we reach the city?” She needed the money, it was that simple, she knew they shouldn’t stop, they should drop this job and move on, however she needed fuel for the ship as well. This one, this one wasn’t sitting right.
