She nodded as Juliet started off back towards the kitchen. She was upset with herself. She'd wanted to travel, to get out and see the stars, but it had been a little overwhelming to her. She left her home, though she really wouldn't call it that anymore, truthfully, and was off adventuring as she had always wanted to do. So why did she feel pulled back towards her home now? It didn't matter. She had to steel herself. She said she would help her friend, and she was going to. If Preston was really in the sort of pickle that it seemed he might be, she would have to be at full capacity. She sat there on the crate for a few more minutes, trying to center herself and focus.

Miller was still in the kitchen, scrubbing the pan. It looked nearly clean, but there were still a few bits of egg on it. Juliet leaned against the wall and said, "I didn't expect you to still be here."
"I said I'd clean the dishes, and I don't go back on my word." He shrugged. "Most of the time, anyway. Is this egg stuff usually so hard to clean?"
"There's no real trick to getting it off besides hard work," Juliet said. "You've never had to clean a pan before, have you?"
"It's Amanda's job," he said. "Do you want it back?"
"Got some engine stuff to do?" she asked, taking back her position at the sink. He hadn't done a bad job, and she only had a tricky little spot to take care of.
"Not really. I just don't like washing dishes." Miller grinned, and Juliet made a face at him. Taking a more serious tone, he asked, "Is your friend okay?"
"I suppose. She doesn't trust the captain."
"Who does?"

She sat for a short while before she went back to moving crates around. The cargo bay was all in a mess, apparently the captain didn't care much for organization. That bothered Victoria more than a little bit. She shook her head, but it was something to distract her for a while at least. She started pulling crates around the bay, lifting the smaller ones on top of some of the larger ones. She was getting quite the workout from it, and after only about an hour of work, she was already tired. Maybe it was partially from the adrenaline of the near fight early starting to wear off fully, but it was some kind of wearying. She sat back down on one of the crates and leaned against one of them. The cargo bay was straightened up now. She leaned back and closed her eyes.

"Even you don't trust her?" Juliet asked. She set the pan aside to dry but didn't pick up the next dish. "Does anyone on this ship?"
"I'm not sure. I don't trust her more than to pay me and not send me to my death -- on purpose, that is. Harris doesn't trust her, but then she barely trusts anyone. Amanda might, but then she might be only pretending. We don't know much about her." He blew out a slow breath and tapped his heel against the wall.
"Do you trust me?" Juliet asked.
Miller shrugged. "I don't distrust you. You don't seem untrustworthy."
"That's not the same thing."
"I know." He smiled. "I'd better go make sure the engine's not going to explode. You and your friend must be fairly desperate to get to Ariel if you're willing to stick with the captain, and I doubt you want to be stranded. See you around." With a little wave, he left.

She wondered how much longer it would take them to get to Ariel. She'd figured it may be a long trip, but she was hoping that she could have just gone about her business with no incidents. Unfortunately, it hadn't happened that way. As she leaned back on the cargo she found herself drifting off to sleep. She fought against it but the weariness sunk in and she couldn't fight it anymore. She fell asleep.

Juliet finished the dishes and looked about the kitchen for something else to do. There were still a few hours before lunch, and she didn't want to get bored with waiting around. She wasn't sure if Victoria would want her hanging about, especially if she was still in a bad mood from her fight with the captain, and the crew probably didn't want to be bothered by her. Well, Miller might, but she wasn't sure how pleased the captain would be about her hanging about the engine room.
The kitchen was clean and well-organized, and she wished she hadn't spent her whole first day taking care of that. After putting away the dishes, she wandered back to the cargo area but stopped when she saw that Victoria was asleep. As quietly as she could, she crept out, returning after a moment with a blanket. She set it over the woman and slipped away as quickly as she could to find a window where she could watch the stars.

It wasn't long before Victoria woke up. She noticed the blanket over her and knew it had to be Juliet's doing. She folded it up and walked around the ship, looking for her friend. It didn't take long to find her, staring out the viewport at the stars. "Thanks for the blanket," she said as she sat it down and sat on it. "You ok?"

"You're welcome," she said as Victoria joined her. "I'm fine, just bored." She laughed a little. "You probably wouldn't think it from what happened earlier, but that fight just made it worse. This whole trip is just waiting, with a few little exciting parts. I can't wait to get to Ariel, because then we'll be able to actually do something."
She sighed and watched the stars. Back on Whitefall, she could name nearly every constellation, but none of them were recognizable out here. "How are you? Sleep well?"

Victoria had never really paid too much attention to the stars really. She was usually busy just watching her own back. But she took the few moments with her friend to take in the beauty of space. "I'm ok," she answered and giggled a bit when asked if she slept well. "Can't believe I fell asleep like that."

"I can. Some of the hands have little kids, and whenever they're tired, they'll just pass out anywhere." Juliet found herself missing the children a little. A few might have been brats, but the rest had tried to play with her a lot. She pushed them off sometimes, but that just made them enjoy her playing with them even more. "You just got too worn out, and your body decided it ought to take matters into its own hands."
Preston had wanted kids, and she suddenly decided that they would have a whole bunch. Not so many that they would be crowded out of their house, but a nice little cluster. "I didn't mean to imply you're a kid," she added. "It's just the first comparison that came to mind."

She laughed. "Its ok. There's nothing wrong with being a big kid."
She looked away for a brief moment, back to the stars, giving a little elbow to Juliet. "Sounds like you really miss your home already. Damn shame you had to come all the way out here to find Preston. But we will find him, and we'll get you home."

"I guess I miss it a little," she said. "I don't know if I miss that one home so much as the idea of one, though." She rested her elbows on her knees and her chin on her hands. "I'd go farther to find him though, even if it was just to yell at him for leaving without a word." She laughed a little. "Maybe that's why no one else seemed to think we were together. Whenever we were in public, one of us was always teasing the other."
She shifted and stretched. There was still a lot of time before she would have to start cooking lunch, but her restlessness had returned. "What are you going to do when this is over?" she asked. The end of her journey had never seemed closer, now that she knew where Preston was. "Going to find some ship on Ariel and fly off?"

Victoria smiled sweetly at her words. Sometimes teasing each other was the best way to show that you care about each other. She was happy that Juliet had that, and for a brief moment, wished that she had it as well.
"I don't really know for sure. I imagine I'll try to hook up with a crew that I feel I can trust and fly off with them if they'll have me." She looked away for a moment, then back to Juliet. "After seeing the two of you back safely, of course."

"I didn't think you'd be willing to join these ones," Juliet said. "Especially not after what just happened. Miller's all right, I suppose."
She nearly told Victoria that there wasn't any need to see Juliet and Preston back to Whitefall but held her tongue. "Feel free to come by our ranch whenever you want," she said. "No matter how many kids we end up having, there'll be a spot for you to visit."

She smiled. She was glad to see her friend thinking positively. The girl knew she'd find her husband, and knew they'd get back safely and have a whole mess of kids.
"I appreciate that. I will have to sometime. But we never really know what the future holds, do we?" She looked back out at the stars. "How many do you suppose are out there? I mean beyond what we've already found. Wouldn't it be grand to see them all?"
