Kylie had pretty much reached breaking point. All of this was just too overwhelming. Almost getting sucked into space, seeing people getting spiked to the wall, fighting off murderous cannibals,...
She just needed a minute to collect herself before continuing on.
Despite everything, she was calm. Before she would have been hyperventilating and shaking in her shoes, but now she just sat there, with a steady heartbeat and breathing rhythm.
She closed her eyes for a second and put her head on her knees, burying her face in between. Tom had come to sit next to her, and asked her how she was doing. She appreciated that, although she thought a question like that was a strange one to ask in a situation like that.
"I'm fine Tom." Kylie answered. "Why wouldn't I be? This sorta stuff happens to me all the time."
Kylie wasn't trying to be mean or sarcastic, it was just her way of coping with it all.
It was safe to say now that her cherry was popped. After today, she would be a rookie no longer. Just like everyone else on the ship who would have the privilege to survive. If they survived. There was still a world of work ahead of them, the Reavers had breached more areas and also, Tom and Aaron needed to get to a jet so they could do what they did best outside.
She lifted her head up from her knees. Time to get back into the game, it wasn't over yet.
"Getting the wounded to the infirmary is one thing." Kylie answered. "And we still need to get you boys on a jet. But we need to leave some men on the bridge as well. We need to get some engineers in here to fix the damage. Comms are down so I'll lead a small squad down the engine room and get them here. After that I'll see what else needs to be done."
Kylie looked around at the men on the bridge. Seemed like everyone else was catching their breath as well. She then turned her head a bit closer to Tom. There was something else on her mind as well.
"Look Tom," Kylie said with a lowered voice. "I think it's safe to say that the captain's KIA. I don't know who else is out there but considering you're on the bridge... I think you're next in line to assume command. I've already done more than I should I think, so I think you should probably take it from here, no?"
