YOU AND I WALK A
FRAGILE LINE {I have know it all this time} It was a few days after the young companion had entered the Trinity, and she'd kept to herself. She'd settled into the shuttle, enjoying it. It was set up just right, and the cat that was curled up on the bed enjoyed it as much as her. She found herself venturing out on small trips into the cargo hold. She'd literally panicked after she'd gotten her things into her shuttle. Luckly no one had seen but the cat. She needed to get a hold of herself. Determined yes, idiotic no.
She wasn't able to sleep, and so with a few quick movements she grabbed the robe, and slipped her feet into her cute slippers (every companion had something cute). She tied the rope and headed out of her shuttle. She wandered up until she found the bridge. (not hard to find). She was very quite as she moved. It was night time, and everyone was asleep. Or supposed to be. She stopped, as she looked up at the sky. Ariel had so much light pollution it usually wasn't worth it to even care. But here it was just beautiful. She kept her eyes up, her hair down, cascading down her back, and a long length of leg showing. She listened to the sounds of the ship. Trinity was a strong ship, she could hear it. But there was something about the crew that read sadness. She wasn't sure why.
Either way it didn't matter. She stood there, staring up at the stars, letting herself drift. Relax even. She didn't even notice as a golden and black cat padded up and curled up next to her, a soft purr rumbling from his chest, before he fell asleep.

Another night saw Roger out of bed and wandering the ship in his sleep. The duration of his nightly adventures had been slowly decreasing over the past few days but they were far from ceasing, nearly a nightly occurrence since the last job. Most of the time just saw him stuck in his bunk either 'busy' with something down there or perhaps the ladder up giving his uncoordinated subconscious trouble.
Tonight, however, he was out in the ship and currently plodding along from the stern of the ship toward the bow. He stumbled here and there but for the most part his body had memorized where all the lips in the floor and other trouble spots were and he subconsciously avoided them as he walked.
The browncoat entered the cockpit at the fore of the ship but didn't seem to notice the companion and her pet who remained still in the darkness. Instead he simply made his way to the forward arms locked to check it for some reason or other before he would head off someplace else on his nightly rounds.

YOU AND I WALK A
FRAGILE LINE {I have know it all this time} While she wasn't paying attention, the cat was. He stood up when the man entered, but she was lost in her day dream. The cat had snapped out of his dream the moment he heard the foot step inside the room. He growled, and touched his cold nose to her leg. She half jumped, spun and stared. Roger Davis was in the bridge with her. And it was obvious that he wasn't awake. He hadn't noticed her, and she was pretty sure that a man would notice her standing there.
"Mr Davis?" she asked, taking a step forward. She'd never dealt with sleep walkers, but she'd heard things. The cat hissed, but refused to move from her side, so as they got closer to the man, the higher his hair went. He didn't like the situation, and he couldn't understand why his usually terrified human was nearing the weird human that smelled asleep, including the fact that his heart rate was down. He growled again, reaching out to touch her foot, claws in. She ignored it.
"Mr. Davis. Wake up. Now." she wasn't sure it was safe to touch him, but this was the closes she'd gotten to anyone in the last few days, a mear feet from him.

Sofia's first attempts to make contact failed to rouse Roger. He simply kept moving, oblivious to her. The second more forceful attempt elicited a response. He mumbled something and then turned toward her, a glazed look still over his face. Roger didn't recognize the woman or her pet for that matter. They were fairly new arrivals on board the Trinity after all.
Luckily the first-mate didn't default to his typical reaction of drawing his weapon on an unknown person within the ship. Even in such a reduced state he had done so in the past. Actually, he'd gone through entire firefights while technically asleep in his past. Any attempt to wake him would have to be more forceful than simply calling his name.

YOU AND I WALK A
FRAGILE LINE {I have know it all this time} He turned towards her. Well that was a start. She frowned slightly. "Roger." her voice again didn't work. She reached out and touched his arm. "Roger?" she didn't know why she called his first name, but for now, she'd go with it. How would one wake a young child?
"Roger, you have to wake up now. Come on." she debated shaking him, but wasn't so sure that was a good idea. The cat hissed again, as she again reached out and touched him, this time actually grabbing his arm. "Come on. Wake up. Your sleep walking. Which wile bizarre is oddly not well... odd. Come on. Wake up." she moved so she was standing infront of him, and stared up at him, annoyed now.

The firm and forceful touch was finally what worked. Saying Roger was startled would be an understatement. All at once the man's eyes shot wide open, he gasped as if his lungs had been empty, he staggered backwards nearly falling over, and he drew his pistol and pointed it right for Sofia in the darkness. He kept it trained on her for two agonizing seconds as he repeatedly blinked and shook his head to try and escape the shock.
"Gah, I'm so sorry." he finally said as he lowered and holstered the weapon. He looked around to get his bearings. The cockpit... odd. At least for her to be in there with him. Had she followed him there in an attempt to wake him? He'd obviously been sleepwalking again though he hadn't experienced being woken up from it in over a decade. It took a second to piece it all together. "Are you alright?"

YOU AND I WALK A
FRAGILE LINE {I have know it all this time} She pulled away quickly, and stepped back. The cat moved between her and the man, and she quickly raised her hands as she realized that there was a gun pointed at her. She hadn't expected that reaction. She gasped, and panted sligtly, bairly keeping a scream down. But she was good at that part. She could feel the panic rising again, and she kept still, trying to figure out a way to keep herself from bolting. The hiss from the cat focused her, as she looked down. The animal was compleatly angry and obviously ready to attack the man. His voice fully snapped her out of it.
"It's alright. I'm fine. Cat shut up." she said as she crouched beside the cat, to tap his nose. He snarled at her and bolted, his tail fluffy as he raced out. She stood up and looked at Roger again. "Are you alright? I didn't realize you'd wake up like that. I've only read of sleep walkers." she said, looking down, and wondering why she'd only come out in the short sleeping gown, and the slightly longer robe, and slippers. Stupid stupid stupid!

"They don't teach you in companion school not to wake a sleepwalker?" Roger said in an attempt to make a bad joke and ease the situation. He might have already gotten over it but he also wasn't the one that had a gun pointed in his face if only briefly. "Not everyone with somnambulism would pull a gun on you if that's what you mean. I suppose it doesn't help that I sleep with a gun on me."
Roger sat down still collecting himself back to 100% after the shock. Lucky for him, his subconscious self had a sense of decency so the cold metal of the floor didn't give him a second shock. He typically slept half dressed anyway but apparently he liked to sleepwalk with shoes on and even his coat sometimes too. Though he never slept that way he often woke up more dressed. After the pause to sit he added, "I probably should have stopped carrying it around when I realized I was doing it again, for the safety of the crew and all, though I doubt it would really work."

YOU AND I WALK A
FRAGILE LINE {I have know it all this time} Sofia smiled a little. "Sadly no. That wasn't on the docket." she smiled again as he spoke. "I've had many clients with odd sleeping habits, sleeping with a gun is no problem." she chuckled as she thought about that word usage. Hm. That could get her in trouble. She took another breath of air. Relax. He hadn't moved towards her, which would have made her bolt, which was good, so she could keep calm. She was good at hiding her fears, but sometimes, not so much.
She arched an eyebrow. "So you weren't walking around before?" she didn't mean to pry, but he'd left that one open wide. She cocked her head to the left a bit. "When did you first find out that you sleep walk?" she asked easily, realxing a bit.

It's not that it was really a soft subject for Roger it's just that he'd never really talked about it to anyone before. It was normally infrequent enough and never caused any harm so there never seemed to be a need to talk it over or alert his crews to the potential for it. "I've been a sleepwalker at least since I was about 10 years old." Roger explained. He wasn't really sure why he was opening up to this almost complete stranger but he did any way. "They say that's about the peak age but from what I can gather that's just when it started."
He turned to look at the cockpit window as he remembered back trying to piece together a story that would be coherent enough to follow. "I say that because I'm not sure when it actually started. I found out about it nearly ten years later and just thought back to times where sleepwalking might explain some odd things from my childhood." She probably didn't need to hear about that crap so he pressed forward with the main story. "I found out from the guys back in the war about it. There were night time raids that apparently I had helped fight off, sometimes even personally detected, but in the mornin' I had no recollection of them. I played it off to just lack of sleep... heh, just the opposite. Finally someone confronted me when I was sleepwalkin' the line and they figured out what it was."
"It was always actually kind of helpful, during the war at least. Let me pull two shifts and due to the muscle memory of the job I was still fairly competent even when on autopilot." Roger trailed off with that last part. Again, she didn't need to hear war stories. "Had a few episodes I think since then but I really noticed it the last few weeks. Wakin' up with my gun on the nightstand instead of in the holster, shoes still on... that kind of stuff where somethin' is slightly amiss. I hate to think what I was doin' with my gun out in the middle of the night." He looked up at her. "Well, this certainly didn't happen before."
"Best I can tell it's a reaction to stress or grief or somethin' that sets it off. I normally get a few episodes here and there but during the war it was nearly every night and since our last mission it's been almost as bad." There it was. His whole sleep walking story. Probably more than she bargained for but she'd asked the question.

YOU AND I WALK A
FRAGILE LINE {I have know it all this time} She listened, attentive as always, and rather still. She was listening, fully interested. She didn't quite understand, but she'd try. She nodded at the right moments and didn't say anything. When he finished she nodded. "Well... That was a bit more than expected, but it makes sence." she said easily.
She thought about his last statment. "So what happened on the last mission that's caused these episodes? If you don't mind me asking." polite, and easily. She could talk about other things. A cat sauntered back in. He moved towards the man, sniffed him and then promptly sat down on his foot. He started to cleain himself. "I see he's claimed you." she said with a light laugh. The cat turned yellow eyes on her and growled, then relaxed again.
She smiled a little, enjoying the cat. She liked him. He didn't have a name but that didn't matter. "So what brought you here?"

Roger hesitated before answering the next question. It wasn't that he needed more time to put things together in explanation but because he wasn't sure he should even say. No, that was Lieutenant Davis thinking. There was nothing threatening operational security by telling her about the last job. All that was left from it were bad feelings and memories not anything someone could use against them. If anything the story would probably elevate the crew in her eyes.
"Well if you thought the last one was long then you might want to find a more comfortable seat for this story." Roger began. "I got picked up at the start of the year for this job for a Duke Rider. Maybe you heard of him, he's Chief of the Nobles Court now. Well it's a simple job to transport legitimate goods. The only problem is that the pay is far too good to be true."
"Naturally things start to fall apart on us. After we pick up the goods we get 'routine boarded' by an Alliance cruiser. Then when makin' the drop apparently the job expands to us stealin' some documents or something, I don't know not my field of expertise. It turns out we aren't the only ones doing a double cross because they capture one of our crew to sell as a slave. With the situation spiralin' out of control there's this big gun battle as we fight our way out of there back to the ship."
"After regroupin' we find out where they took our crew member and pull some strings of our own to get in there. Turns out to be not only a slave auction but a companion auction at that. We went in posing as sellers then get close and reveal our true intentions. We rescued our girl and any others we can find before we again shot our way out of there takin' as many slavers as possible down in the process."
"As you might expect, some people were mighty upset at us ruinin' their party so we were pursued. Trinity got shot down and then while crashed we had yet another intense battle. The captain undertook a suicide mission to save the rest of us. Hence Sidney is only recently our captain after replacing James Clark. That's why we picked up Tristram recently to bolster our numbers. That's why the ship looks like it underwent massive repairs recently. That's why Tari is still recovering from her wounds. And that's why the crew, especially young Kalli, is in mournin'."
While he had been retelling the story, Sofia's cat, if you could call it simply that, approached and made itself at home. Roger had no problem with animals but this thing has borderline wild and not to mention potentially very dangerous. Why a companion would be trailing such a creature around was a bit of a mystery. "Alright, my turn. Where did this little guy come from and how did he end up with you?"

Sidney had been asleep in his rack as the ship was out on its travels. The days had been passing and the crew was starting to get itself back in to working order. SIdney had never been the best of sleep and drifted in and out, more often then not memories of his past would wake him up. This night was no different then the rest, except that when he finally did wake up he could hear voices talking somehwere in the ship. He pulled himself from his bunk and made has way out in to the hall and down toward the voices he heard. Roger and the new companion Sofia were talking.
Roger was explaining how he had found his way to the Trinity and what they had been through since then. He didn't inturrupt the conversation instead opting to just stand back and listen. He didn't feel the need to join the conversation. He wasn't much of a talker really. Most people had tried to get him talking at one point or another with little success and it was best he didn't just walk in and kill the conversation. Roger had become a trusted member of the ship, so much so that SIdney had placed him as his first mate.

YOU AND I WALK A
FRAGILE LINE {I have know it all this time} The companion listened easily, though her gaze turned angry at the idea that companions were sold at auction. Then she thought about it. Sometimes the high priestesses did buy girls to train. It was actually better than letting them be slaves. She sighed, looking away. She'd never agreed with that part. Then again, she was who she was. The rest of the story did explain why the crew was off, why the ship looked half new, and why it seemed that Sidney wasn't fully sure about his possition, weather he realized it or not, it showed to someone who was trained to look for that unsurity, usually to sooth it, but that wouldn't be happening here.
The cat looked up at the man and mrowed. "He was given to me by friends. He was born wild, never hurt anyone though. He's been a great help to me." she didn't explain why. His story was for the whole crew, her's was extreamly personal, and not something a lady gave out. A companion could be a lady, after all. "He doesn't have a name, never has actually, just usually cat." she said as she crouched down, petting him. He purred, wrapping himself around her legs. She stood up as she heard another set of footsteps, and eyed Sidney.
"Captain?" she asked, watching him.

Sofia's story certainly wasn't as long or revealing as either of Roger's. Perhaps there wasn't any more to tell but maybe she just wasn't as comfortable telling the whole story. She probably didn't see herself as part of the crew, only a passenger. Maybe time as a companion had also made her shut off from connecting with people due to the nature of the business but that was all just Roger's speculation. He'd never even seen one until after the war and even then his experience was limited to passing them on the street or in a public place. Maybe there was a word or two spoken but for the most part he just kept moving. One of the ships he'd served on transported a companion but the two didn't really speak and the trip was only a week long. None of that stopped him from being perceptive of what he did observe though it seemed wrong to judge Sofia and all other companions off of a few observations and deductions.
Though focused on Sofia and his own stories, Roger was still not oblivious to what was happening on the ship. Before the companion called Sidney out, Roger knew he was there. Even the smallest of movements made a noise in a quiet ship traveling through the silent void. No one else had even remotely similar footsteps to Sidney, Roger himself being the closest. Knowing he was there, Roger had said nothing. The captain was doing what he always did, listening rather than speaking. It was just his way.
