I went by a version of the list chris posted when I made sibil and echo, plus my background char adamala; though I thought ensign was the "newbie" type rank - I'm good with the list chris posted personally, we do need an 'official' listing of ranks, I hadn't thought of it, go chris =)

It is hard to say what rank stucture to go with on it. There is little mentioned in the series about it.
We see the ranks of:
Captain Commander Colonel Ensign
We can assume there are others The colonel was in charge of a ship suggesting it is of higher rank. although this doesn't mean we need to follow exactly to this. If we go with Ari's set I would make a few modifications and clarifications. It uses a bit more British then American ranks. Odd since the Alliance is China and USA but not ouside the realm of possibility. (Commodore is not in the US rank structure but when translated over it is the equvilant of an a lower level admiral)
Officers Admiral Commodore Captain Commander Lieutenant commander Lieutenant Sub-lieutenant Ensign Midshipman or Cadet (while in training)
Enlisted Warrant officer Chief Petty officer Petty officer Leading seaman Seaman first class Seaman second class
Those would be all the british ranks. There is also the option of going with the warrant officers and enlisted like the US ranks
Chief warrant officer Warrant officer
Master Chief petty officer Senior Chief petty officer Chief petty officer Petty officer first class Petty officer second class Petty officer third class seaman seaman apprentice seaman recruit
I kind of like the idea of the British officers and then the US enlisted. just a though and some details for everyone to mull over.

Ok so I couldn't settle with just that I had to brake it down a bit more being that I am former military myself, I wasn't sure if people would know to much about how the rank structure would work. so here is sort of my impression of what it would be like in the case of the Esteem and other Alliance ships.
Commander of the fleet - Admiral Tigh Vanguard He is in charge of a large group of ships. Most likely in this case a resurgence fleet. Their goal is to push Alliance control back out over the boarder worlds peacefully and over time after the uprising.
lets say the fleet consists of about 12 ships of similar size adn class to the Esteem. He would have that broken down in to 2 battle groups that would have a Commodore in charge of each of those groups. Each ship other then the ones lead by the commodores would have captains in charge of them (though in a real situation a Captain would command each of those ships the Admiral and Commodores are on as well)
Now the brake down for the Esteem itself.
Commander - Admiral Tigh Vangard Executive Officer (XO/First Mate) - Commander (Enter name here) (Could be a Lt. Commander though that is lower then normal) Department Chiefs (Security, Engineering, Hanger bay, Tactical) Commander or Lt. Commander (more often a Lt. Commander) Bridge crew - Lt Commander or below (some times a commander who would be the third in line behind the XO - such as Commander Echo Donovan) Shift/section leads- Sub-lieutenant or Ensign Enlisted department chiefs (those who help the department chiefs directly) - Master Chief petty officer or Senior Chief petty officer or Chief petty officer (using the British ranks it would be Warrant officer) Enlisted team leaders - Petty officer first class, Petty officer second class, Petty officer third class (british ranks - Petty officer) And general staff would be - seaman, seaman apprentice, seaman recruit (British ranks - Leading seaman, Seaman)
Cadet or midshipman would be the officer in training and a recruit would be the enlisted in training.
And one last note for those who don't have a clue about military ranks officer and Enlisted are totally different set of ranks. For example I went in as Enlisted in the Army so no matter how long I was there or how hard I worked for it I wouldn't go to officer ranks. Someone who gets commissioned as an officer starts at the rank of cadet and works their way up the officer list. Two separate chains. The officers are the leadership and the enlisted are the grunts who do the hard labor. Thos doesn't mean officers don't do the hard work either it just means they are more like a supervisor or manager most of the time.
A good example of this is in a army combat situation the officer is there with the enlisted and may be shooting the guns along side the enlisted but he is also the one who has to decide on a plan of action on how to achieve the goal. Then it is the upper enlisted personnel job to know how to use his men to do that and the lower enlisted are the ones being told to do it directly. all the while the upper enlisted and officers are right there along side them as they do it. make sence? if not I will help explain it more.
