The Avatar is gone.
It happened a year before our tale began. Avatar Cahaya was summoned to the Fire Nation to put an end to ongoing riots in the capital, but that noble act meant her untimely death. But when her life came to an end, so did something of far greater value to our world.
Legend has it that the Avatar Cycle will end forever if the Avatar dies in the Avatar State, and that was exactly what happened to our beloved Cahaya. Many eyewitnesses beheld when she fell lifeless to the ground, the haunting blue glow of her tremendous power fading quickly. In mere moments, humankind would be forever separated from the Spirit World. No longer would there be someone of such great power to keep balance among the four nations.
It was a true surprise when the authorities declared her death was a murder, traced to a small metal needle in her back. Poison was the cause, according to the evidence. But who was the culprit? Avatar Cahaya grew up in a time of peace, loved by many indeed, and nobody knew her to make any enemies whatsoever in her lifetime. It was a true mystery.
The world would sway out of balance soon enough. As the people lost hope, many spiritual leaders rose up to care over those crushed with despair. Many cared sincerely for the public, while others only sought power. Some used questionable means to meet their goals. Whatever the case, it became common to see new spiritual movements arise and the desperate masses fall to their influence.
The Fire Nation faced problems all its own. As the noble classes squandered money and resources, the poor folk suffered. A rebel faction was formed among the commoners due to this widening gap between rich and poor, with the aim of overthrowing this defective government. As the last nobleman who supported the lower classes lay in his deathbed, the rebels sought the perfect chance to strike.
Little did this faction know who the real ruler of their nation was. Unbeknownst even to the Firelord himself, the Fire Nation was controlled by the powerful leader of an organized crime ring. The economic system of the nation was firmly under his grip, and his eyes and ears were all over the world.
The three Earth Kingdoms had problems all their own. They had lived on good terms for generations, but greed and ambition overtook the Western Earth King soon enough. Desiring more land to call his dominion, he plotted to overthrow the Eastern Earth Kingdom, even forming a strong alliance with the Fire Nation mob boss to gain greater influence.
Even after all of this, there is yet more to the story.
My name is Taartoq. I am a scholar who left my home village in the mountains and documented this journey. I saw many lives touched by these events, changed for better or for worse. Yes, the world was truly a different place once the Avatar was no more.
But where were you during our tale?
