Okay, so we definately need to get a grip on the ranks aboard the Esteem and Horizon if we want things to check out. I sorta expected Kylie to be on the bottom of the Esteem's food chain, but apparently she outranks a few characters.
So we know the Alliance uses the British Naval System, which is the following, from highest to lowest:
Admiral of the Fleet Admiral Vice Admiral Rear Admiral Commodore Captain Commander Lieutenant-Commander Lieutenant Sub-Lieutenant Midshipman Officer Cadet
Please post your character(s), your character's rank and ship(s) below.
Like this:
Kylie Grasan, Lieutenant, Esteem.

Amaia Sang, Lieutenant, First Mate, Horizon
Also to note, in militaries, there's the idea of rank and grade. Your grade is what you wear on your shoulder (although most people call that rank anyway) - lieutenant, captain, major general, what have you.
Then there's (proper) rank. This is where you are in the chain of command, and is actually a bit more indicative of your "power", at least insofar as where you're stationed. For example, a Lieutenant may be put in charge of a ship because he has the experience, while the mechanic under him is a captain who's been around for longer. The lieutenant has the higher rank, the captain the higher grade, but ultimately, on that ship, the Lieutenant has the power because of where he is on the chain of command.
In the same way, just because you out-grade someone doesn't mean you out-rank them. Just something to keep in mind.

Hmmm..I was all wrong when I put Amara down as a "Sergeant" haha. iFail. Well she was pretty "in" with the Alliance when she was a nameless assassin...and instead of lose her all together they agreed to put her on a ship. I wouldn't want her any higher than Captain but no lower than Lieutenant. Anyone want to help?

Like I put down, I was expecting Lieutenant. She's pretty involved with the Alliance, but hasn't been for all *that* long, so Lieutenant makes sense, especially if the Alliance is filing her onto a ship, and she's taking a relatively high command post there (First Mate)

Well if Amara was the first mate then she'd at least have to be a Commander. It's like the CO and the XO in BSG. If this were BSG then the captain would be the CO and the first mate would be the XO. But if you want her off her Sergeant status, maybe you can have her promoted to Sub-Lieutenant after the Reaver attack on the Esteem. And then later on we can maybe come up with something else to get her promoted to Lieutenant? Or you can skip the Sub-Lieutenant and have her promoted directly to Lieutenant? But heroics of course aren't the only way to get promoted. Amara could always take an exam to become an officer .

I thought about it, and I think maybe Tom should be an LC because I think he was higher in ranking than Kylie when he greeted her, but I didn't want him to be too high on the totem pole. Plus, he was a Major (because my stupid self didn't know what ranking systems the Alliance used) before he was a captain, so maybe they just demoted him to his former rank (major is equivalent to lt. commander). What's funny, though, is that I always thought of Amara as outranking Tom. She's more of a leader than he. there's a cool table at the bottom right of this page that shows the ranks and equivalents: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_rank
