It looked like the Raven was nearly filled up after just one day of miraculously successful recruitment. Friedrich wasn't exactly happy with all the hires but no one seemed to be a complete waste and maybe some would improve on their first appearances. In the last day the mechanic had done a whirlwind tour of the ships systems which he'd just finished.
With an eighteen hour day he'd spent time on the engine and also inside the engine, crawling through ductworks, working on the electrical in the bridge, hammering out a few external issues, and briefly checking interior functionality like door controls, light switches, and the like. The ship was in pretty good shape considering it was a firefly, a fairly ancient vessel older than most people and certainly around long after someone would toss and replace a car... and cars didn't need to fly around and protect you from the void of space.
"Kapitän!" Friedrich called out to Jadyn. "I haf looked ofer ze ship. My report." He indicated a stack of paper in his hand. It was hand written and mostly in German. "I don't know how much use it vill be to you. Nosing I can't handle from replacement of engine components to..." he flipped through the bundle. "... flickering lights. I can have Fräulein Emily verk on ze Flugzeugkanzel... er, cockpit. Perhaps Garret could be put to verk helping me acquire materials vile still here."
Friedrich didn't want to be so blunt about requisitioning other crew members for his jobs but it seemed necessary and prudent to ask. The pilot should know a little about her controls and it would be impossible to fine tune the equipment to her preferences without her being a part of the work team. Their gunhand seemed useless when not on a job so it made sense to use him as unskilled labor rather than let him sit around doing nothing or even shooting people in the street. Also, without acquiring the raw materials now there would be nothing to work with during the down-time traveling through space. Even with Friedrich's skills they'd be just like any other crew if he couldn't fabricate a replacement part for a vital system. The bottom line was that Friedrich wanted the work to be done as best as possible and as soon as possible. The longer they were on the ground the easier they could work on the ship.
(I didn't proofread at all, sorry.
Fräulein - Miss Flugzeugkanzel - Cockpit, literally the plane's raised pulpit like area AKA the Bridge. There is no good word for "bridge" as in a ship's bridge as far as I know.)

Jadyn had been in the kitchen, attempting to make some kind of food, when she heard the german's voice. "Yeah?" she called, helping show the man where she was. When he came up he flipped through the papers, and she caught a bit of it. She nodded, understanding a bit. "Emily should know her cockpit, talk to her. Garrett is a passanger, but you can ask him. I'm sure he'd be willing to help. We won't be taking off until at least tomorrow, so you have that long. I don't want to stay here to long." she could tell that much of her crew had ties that weren't so great, and it would be nice to get off the planet.
She liked how the man took charge. "Thank you for getting on that." she added, remembering the war, and that a simple phrase could keep a unit going for a while. It was worth it to be polite to the crew, expecially when they were doing good.

The captain gave her blessing for his requests. Friedrich was a bit surprised to hear that Garret was only on as a passenger though. He hadn't been eavesdropped on the conversation the other day so he had assumed the man was hired as an extra gun... having introduced himself as "gun for hire" and then showing off his skills and weaponry afterward. Something must have happened after the mechanic signed on to change that. Whatever it was, asking a passenger for help was certainly different than getting another crew member to help out.
"Kein Problem." Friedrich replied to Jadyn. Conscious of his recent German he concentrated on saying the next sentence clearly. "Why wouldn't I do my job?" First day or not, it didn't make sense to stand by when there was work to do. Even if the ship needed no repairs he'd still need to familiarize himself with it. If they waited until they were up, unchecked systems could fail. Working on the ship when it was landed was always best too. Thus time in port simply could not be wasted.
"Ze Raven vill fly, as I'm sure you know, so zer vill be no delays come departure time." Friedrich responded to her earlier comment about getting off the planet. "All repairs are fairly minor and vill simply make ze schip perform better." Some were more minor than others but Friedrich would do his best to make sure all the issues that had the potential to become major problems were dealt with during his one day of planetside work.
(Kein Problem - No Problem, both words being German not just the one.)

Dark eyes looked over the man before her as he spoke. "Some like to take some time to get used to the ship. That's all." she was quiet when she said it, but it was implied that she'd had mechanics that took days to get everything figured out. She was quite glad that he'd done his job right off the bat.
"I am sure she will. Food should be in an hour or so. Let the rest of the crew and passangers know, if you will."

"Time lost." Friedrich replied. "Much to do. Get to know ze schip later; improve on initial repairs." He hoped that his insistence and urgency were not off-putting. Most captains would be happy to have an industrious hard worker but it could also result in a negative reaction when viewed in contrast to oneself. Jadyn did not appear to be the type that would have such a petty reaction but her words might have been a suggestion for his behavior rather than a statement of past experience.
"Ja, okay." He said hurriedly. "I can haf assignments ready for ze villing." Unconsciously he came to attention and gave a sharp nod of his head before departing. He then turned back to the engine room to use the one remaining hour to get started on all the work. There was no need to write up assignments since he'd already done it for Garret and Emily. Tasks for other volunteers were also ready at least mentally. Besides, it certainly wouldn't take an hour to write a few lists. The time was better spent clearing out the ignition sequence so there would be no doubt that the Raven's engine would spin up on the first try.

Jadyn smiled a bit, and nodded. "Glad you agree." she watched him as she continued to make food. She could do it, though it would be standard for a bit. She started to speak but stopped herself as he spoke again. "Friedrich, what side were you on? In the war?" She knew it was blunt, but it was better to get everything out in the air as soon as possible.
She smiled slightly, as if to show that she didn't care which one, which she didn't. To her it didn't matter. Not right then. Probably never would.

Friedrich stopped abruptly after only taking two steps back toward engineering. This question could be a deal-breaker for many. His last captain had been an Alliance officer during the war but somehow things had worked out. Who knows what this woman's connections were but her tone and the fact that she only asked now at least hinted that she wasn't about to toss him out on his ass if he gave the wrong answer.
The mechanic turned to face her directly before answering. "I fought for ze Independents." He replied with a bit more pride than he actually felt for his service. If this was going to turn out badly then there was no sense in trying to sneak an answer in apologetically. "Korporal Hoffman, vierundzwanzige unabhängig Kampfgruppe, Beaumonde Berufssoldaten." His follow-up was not simply a failure to translate but symbolic of his all German unit, or at least his German battalion within the unit and how they referred to themselves.
"And you?" It was a bit out-of-character for Friedrich to ask of his captain but he certainly was curious. Normally he would have answered and then continued on his way but Jadyn's own straightforward way of asking prompted him to reply in kind. She was clearly a fighter, likely former military, and about the same age as he was. It was quite possible that she fought as well.
(Korporal Hoffman, vierundzwanzige unabhängig Kampfgruppe, Beaumonde Berufssoldaten = Corporal Hoffman, Twenty-fourth Independent Brigade (Group), Beaumonde Regulars)

The woman nodded as he spoke. She could see he was tence. "Alliance. Lieutenant, Sniper, Didn't have an exact group. Known as Nighthawk to some. Don't have ties to the Alliance any more though." she said respecting him. She had heard of the unit, but there had been no Psychic's in it, so it was not targeted. She looked a thim though, understanding him worry, or at least tence figure.
"I cut ties with everyone but my brother when I baught this ship years ago." she said with a half smile, and turned to put something in a pot. "Probably more browncoat now than I ever was." she said, using the term that most browncoats used for themselves, and in pride. She understood now what they did,and why.

Alliance, officer, and a sniper without a unit. That was probably as bad a background as you could get when trying to make friends outside of running into an Admiral... and he'd already done that. Even as she said the first word, Friedrich already expected the addition that she was no longer Alliance friendly. Most of the "winners" and especially the officers did not have to turn to such work. Bernett, a part of the High Command, had even distanced himself from the Alliance so it was understandable that this woman had done the same for her own reasons.
"Schade. Unfortunate zat you had to leaf it behind." Friedrich replied. It was a hard thought not just to walk away from a cause and a country but all family, friends, and community except for one person. He sensed that she was truthful about cutting her ties but he had the feeling that her assurances about her completely changed allegiance was more to put him at ease. Such words were unnecessary. "I harbor no ill feelings for Alliance uzer zan disagreements. It vas var and now it is ofair."
(Schade - Pity, actual German while the others are mispronunciations. Zat - That Leaf - Leave Uzer - Other Zan - Than Vas - Was Var - War Ofair - Over)

Jaydn nodded as he spoke. Good, she didn't want to deal with aminosity on her ship. She had left that life behind, and that was that. She knew that she was a nieve person sometimes, but she hid it well. She watched him a little, wondering how long he had faught for, but it didn't matter. They both were soldiers and when it came down to it, she understood that he would take orders when she gave them, and she'd listen to his idea's. It was her way.
"Let's just hope no one else deicdes there's something amiss with our soldier status." she said her voice light. She was making it seema lot better than it probably was. She hopped to be off this rock soon, but she couldn't always be sure.

She took his words the way they were intended. Good. More so than most he was familiar with the concept of "lost in translation" and all too often his meaning and even his words were not understood. "You talk mit Alliance and I take Independent. Mannschaft... crew watches one another." He said with a half grin before turning back to leave once again. That engine wasn't going to clean itself out now was it?
(Mit- with Mannschaft - crew, team, squad. Literally a "thing of men" AKA a group of people.
Also, sorry for such a short post. Friedrich always tends to be short and I suppose late night, plus an annoying cough, and the thread wrapping up combine to give me no muse to write more.)
