It was early morning with the Firefly class ship landed with a large thump. A few moments later the cargo ramp lowered and two people left. A tall man walked off next to a slight, slim woman. She nodded to him, handed him some money and off he went. She took a deep breath before stepping off the ship. She was obviously carrying a pistol, but her knife was hidden, and her dark eyes were sharp. She grabbed a rather off white beach chair out of the ship, and set it up. She'd sent out a wave that the Raven (The firefly behind her) was looking for crew. Now it was just time to see if anyone bit.
It had taken a great deal of her money that she'd managed to get together before leaving, to get the Raven out here, with a temporary pilot. She just hoped the new one could actually fly the damn thing. The last one had been a bit bumpy. Her blonde hair looked almost orange in the early morning sun, but as the sun rose, it was obvious it was quite blonde. She took out a knife, and leaned back in the chair, the leather jacket keeping back the slight morning chill. The woman knew that soon she'd be taking off the jacket, but for now she'd leave it on. She cut a string off of her pants then put it back and watched the people, already moving around, and glanced at the other ships, as they flew in, or out, depending.

"I hope you don't intend to rob an old man" Said Dexter calmly, staring evenly at the two men who now faced him, knives drawn. "Because as you can see I don't have anything of value." He leaned on his staff, opening his other arm to show himself to be empty handed. "And I will warn you, there are consequences for actions such as these." He sighed, "So may I pass?"
"Shut it Gramps" the taller man said, stepping forward. "Now hows about you just gives us whatever pretty you have on you, and then my associate wont beat you to a pulp." He grinned a yellow grin, and licked the blade of his knife, "I'm sure you have something."
Dexter sighed, and looked around. There was no one near enough to intervene, and he regretted his choice to take a back alley. "I assure you, I don't have anything you want." He shrugged, "I would advise you leave this old Shepherd be, and go rethink your lives." He hefted the small pack on his back a little higher, and picked up his only other item, a soft woolen bag that had his clothes and few other possessions. "Now, I am leaving." And he stepped forward, heading past them.
"Get him" the man said, and lunged at Dexter, his partner following.
Dexter saw the motion coming, and dropped to a knee. The first man overshot and landed in a heap behind him, stunned for a moment. Dexter then brought his stick up, and caught the second man in the chin as he charged him. The thief fell in the dust. "Have a good day." Said Dexter, and headed to the docks. It was time to leave. He emerged from the alley, and looked around. The docks were a mess of movement, and he felt the press of large crowds. He leaned on his staff for a moment, and then headed off to find a way off this planet.
He passed ship after ship, merely shaking his head as he continued. Then, he paused. There was a ship just ahead of him, a Firefly, if he remembered correctly. He had seen them before, even ridden on one, and the memories were highly pleasant. A woman was sitting on the ramp, and he walked over to her. "Excuse me." He said, pleasantly, dropping his bags in the dirt, and resting on his staff. His leg was hurting him slightly. "Do you have room for an old man?"

It didn't take a psychic to see he was a preacher, but she didn't mind them. She stood up as the old man came closer. She nodded to him, a bit of her hair falling across her face. She waited until he came up and spoke to try to feel him out. Nothing. She didn't let her gaze slip a second. "Depends on where your goin'. Can't take you to the core." she said, seeming a lot more friendly that most anyone would expect. She was a smart woman though, and waited, arms at her side, fingers brushing up against the green fabric of her pants.
"Jayden Hyde." she added, putting her hand out. "And other than the core we can get you anywhere." she was quick, and to the point, but not unkind. She had some like of the preachers that moved around, though she wasn't overly religious herself.

Dexter smiled at the woman, she seemed nice enough. She answered his questions, and introduced herself and he nodded. "The name is Shield," He said, taking her hand firmly in his own. She had a strong grip, and her hands had the feel of someone who had been many places, and lived hard. "And as for where I'm going, well, I don't know myself." He smiled, and leaned on his staff. "But this ship seems as good as any to get me there." He looked around, "And better than most."
She was hiding something, but then again, who wasn't these days. He looked at the ship, as if thinking it over even though he had already decided. "I don't have much money.." He said, looking her in the eyes without shame. "But i can help you with things around the ship." He winced as his leg twinged. "I have fair skill in the kitchen, and I know a little about medicine." he gave her a questioning look. "If you can't take me, I'll understand."

Someone who just wanted to travel. Hm. She had a feeling she'd be stuck with him on her ship for a while, but oddly she didn't mind. "Well, Shepherd Shield, as long as you help out, and keep out of trouble, I have no problems with you joining the Raven. We won't lift off for a few days, but as your our first passanger, you can choose your room from any of the passanger dorms." she said stepping back. She glanced at the ship.
"Raven is her name, You seem to have been on one before, if your look says anything." she said moving into the ship a bit, out of the sun, and stripping out of her jacket, already it was to hot. She smiled at him though, and waited.

Dexter let a wide smile break on his face as she spoke. "As a matter of fact I have." He said, in response to her theory on his experience with Fireflies. "Years ago though." He closed his eyes for a minute, a happy memory. "Nothing quite like it is there?" He nodded as she spoke, and smiled even wider, "Thank you for the kindness." He said, inclining his head, "It is much appreciated." He bent and lifted his few items and then walked up the ramp.
The shade cast by the ship was cool and pleasant, he took a deep breath and then looked at the captain. She also had moved into the shade. "Again, I thank you." He said and then walked into the ship, finding his way to the passenger area and walking into the first room he reached. Once inside he simply set his bags down, and then headed back out to where the captain was. He might as well get to know her.
"You seem quite young for a captain," He said as he approached. He still had his staff, his leg was beginning to throb, and he rubbed it as he leaned on the staff. "No offense meant of course, but i can see it in your eyes as well." His face took a slight look of concern, "You have seen much, for one so young." He sighed, slightly. "Almost too much."

She nodded. Part of her wondered at the story, but she'd long ago figured out that curiosity was not always useful. She watched him go, staying quiet. She moved the chair further onto the ramp and then sighed. She needed more than a single shepherd to get this boat off the ground. She hoped a pilot, and may be a few more passengers would make their way to her ship, so she could pay for the fuel and get off this rock. "Your welcome." she said, her manners coming through a bit.
Then the Shepherd was back. She looked at him as he spoke, again wondering why she couldn't quite read his thoughts. Her mind slipped off of his mind like hands on a greased pig. She eyed him. "There are younger captains out there, and I ain't as young as I look." she said, skirting around his comment about her eyes. Yes she'd seen more than she'd like, but still. It was not something one talked about. "What about yourself? What is a Shepherd doing traveling in the Black with a ship like Raven?"

Dexter smiled, amused by her attempts to put on a show of bravado. Part of him was sad that she had been through so much, but sheltering a person was just as bad. He sighed, and shook his head. But then she was asking him questions. Although he wasn't one to tell storied of his own, he saw no problem with telling the truth. After all, she had done him a great service. "Well," He said, with a smile "I suppose you could say that I am just drifting with the wind."
"I move where i am called, haven't really been able to find a place to settle yet, and i can do the most good if i go wherever there may be need." He shrugged, and leaned on his staff more. "Ships go places, bring people, and i figure if God wants me to stop, then I'll stop." He smiled at her. "But just because I am a shepherd doesn't mean that I have to be in a parish. In fact many of us choose to travel, for those exact reasons." He gave her a slight wink, "Besides, where else could an old man like me find something as exciting as a Firefly?"
He felt his leg tighten up and winced a little. "Pardon me if I sit." He said, seating himself on a nearby crate. "But you can't honestly claim to have no idea why I would want to be here." He smiled, "I would bet you know the answers yourself. It is the same for us all, i think. There is just something special about a ship."

Jaydn hadn't thought of that. Hm. She listened to him, leaning against the door of her ship. She really did love the raven. She nodded as he spoke. "That i can understand. Just don't push it on anyone, and I doubt we'll be having any troubles. I might even want to listen to some sermons at some point." she said with a half smile. he was relaxing to be around. She let herself relax a bit to, and just a bit of a young woman, who knew what she was doing, and wasn't afraid of much shown through. She was still broken, but not as bad as she was at the end of the war.
"She's your home now to, don't need to ask if you can sit." she said with a smile. She grabbed the chair and sat down herself. She nodded a little as he spoke. "Freedom, the ability to get out of dodge, and to see the stars. On Lundinium is quite bright, and it's hard to see the starts. I've always loved them though."

The mechanic found himself on Persephone, a Scheißhäuser if ever he'd seen one. It was a fine place to scrounge for scraps but that was really all it was, a mess of junk or at least this section of the world. It seemed unfair to make such a generalization based on one city. After all, Beaumonde was known for its sprawling industrial cities yet it had vibrant rural areas too. That didn't really matter though because Friedrich was here in the filth not out in the nice part of Persephone if even there was one. Trying to piece trash together to make something of value could only keep him interested for so long. He needed to leave so he was headed to the docks looking for passage.
"Verzeihung.... excuse me." Friedrich stumbled to correct himself as he caught the attention of the woman and older man outside the Firefly. "You are looking fer crew, ja?" It was a guess but he said it with confidence as if the only response could be 'ja'. It probably was since most captains were always willing to hire an extra hand or two if they had the right skills and Friedrich had the skills. "I am ze best. You vant me on yawr schip."
(Scheißhäuser - Literally translates shithouse but more loosely is like a shithole as in a latrine/outhouse. Verzeihung - Basically means 'pardon me'. More formal than something like Entschuldigung. Fer - Simply mispronounced 'for', not actual German. Ja - yes. I am ze best. You vant me on yawr schip. - Just him not speaking English properly. "I am the best. You want me on your ship.")

Thomas was trying to get a quiet drink for once in his life, yet the stupid seemed to follow him every where. His poor mood went foul. He had to make a run after a job went south way south. So much so that his badge was almost taken way and he was going to get back at the slimes that tried to ruin him. He yea he was still a tinman but his name was shot. Now more of a merc/lawman than anything else. A part of him hated for being on this side of the law of sorts but it could not be helped.
Another tap upon his shoulder he sighed, and turning he was met with a fist to his right jaw. Thomas spun clear around and slamed the drunk into the bar. The drunk's head hit so hard it bounced off the bar and made the metal brass pipe ones leaned on ring out. He didn't need words the look from his eyes said many words of their own. Still another ran up to him to mash him into the bar only found the far wall as he flew over the bar and into the wall.
Thomas moved toward the main doors with his stuff, a half gunny sack, and his long rifle wrapped in an old blanket. He was now ready for anyone. As he moved out the doors not a single man nor woman moved toward him. Shaking his head he quickly moved away from the bar and into the docks. The planet had lost it's welcome for Garret. To many criminals or x-conns head sway over the planet and the city for him to deal with. He had a bit of money left and it was for transportation off world.
Moving through the crowded streets he was getting tired and worn thin from having to grab every street erchin who bumped him and force them to hand his money back. Till he finally found and opening the crowds. Looking at the ships he noted quiet a few he remembered coming to whitefall. Knowing them he moved on most of those were scammers and small timers. They were more after your money than giving you a fair ride. Comming to a firefly class ship with three people at the ramp he went over tothe notice board to see where they were going. The words 'Anywhere but the Core' made him laugh. He also noted to that they were taking on a crew. Being some where was better than being no where, he mused.
He turned to the ramp and saw that one of them was very very drunk. It was not just his slird speech but the odor of the boose that he had been drinking.
Moving to prop up the fellow before he fell down Thomas said.....
Easy now fella. How about a shoulder to lean on before you taste dirt.
Thomas looked at both of them and nodded.
Looks like your going to be busy for a bit. If he's apart of your crew, where would you like me to put him? If not he'll be eatin' dirt 'fore to long. The name's Garret, Thomas Buchannon Garret, now gun for hire.
Those last bit of words tasted biter to him and hung with in his throat as he spoke them.

Before either of the two could respond a man came up behind Friedrich apparently also looking for work and trying to piggyback onto the "job interview" without waiting his turn. In addition he was also touching Friedrich and speaking as if the mechanic was were horribly drunk, so far gone that it was better to speak to the others about him and only offer patronizing words to the man himself.
"Entfern, Schwachkopf!" He ordered as he shook the man's arm off him. He angrily looked the man over before adding. "I sink you half me confused vis yaw own reflection. You look like you came straight from ze bar." It was an exaggeration of course but it looked like the new comer had been drinking a bit although he was not impaired. Friedrich on the other hand was completely sober.
(Entfern - "get off", literally translates to remove yourself but the meaning is basically the same. Schwachkopf - fragile/weak head = idiot, dimwit, halfwit. Others are simple pronunciation. Sink - think, half - have, vis - with, yaw - your, ze - the. I had it completely butchered with other words like confused and reflection but decided it would be way too tough to read.)

Dexter saw a conflict emerging, and since the captain seemed distracted with her thoughts, he decided to intervene. Standing up, he limped out of the ship and stood between the two men, looking first at the one who he recognized to be speaking German. "Beruhig Bruder." He said softly, looking him in the eyes, and holding a hand up, though not in a threatening manner. "This isn't the time or the place." He smiled a warm smile and then turned to look at the other newcomer.
"I believe this man was here first," He said, with a meaningful look, "Perhaps it would be wise to wait your turn." He smiled and then returned to his seat in the shade. "But I suppose this is all up to the captain." For now, the situation seemed to be at least somewhat resolved. He hoped it would stay that way. He closed his eyes, and simply listened for any developments that might occur.
"Beruhig Bruder."- Be Calm, Brother. (more or less)

Post by Fire (Hawk) Owlson on Jun 13, 2012 9:37:21 GMT -5
Fire woke up confused with a banging head in a hotel room . Last night's search for a new job hadn't been very succesfull and he had ended up in a bar drinking until he couldn't remember where he was. Someone had probably brought him to the hotel since he didn't remember how he ended up there either.
He sighed and stroke his forehead that pounded like it was going to explode. With a lot of pain he dressed himself and packed his stuff. He carefully folded his bow and put it together with his sniper rifle in a specially designed case. He put his clothes in a kit bag and hid his revolvers under his shirt. After he had checked the room another time for any stuff he had forgotten, he left and checked out at the reception. 'First some breakfast', he thought as he left the hotel. His eyes caught the little take away business where he always got his food on Persephone. He crossed the street and greeted the owners.
"The usual John", he said smiling. "Hawk!! Long time no see", the owner, John, smiled and gave Fire a hug. He called one of his employees and told him what to make for Fire. "Where have you been?", John asked interested. "Just nowhere and everywhere", Fire said scratching his eyebrow. "No new jobs, éh?", John said picking up on Fire's body language. "No, not really", Fire looked down sighing. "Been here for two days, but still nothing". "It will come", John tried. "Are you still searching for a ship by the way?". Fire looked up. "Uhmm yes, why?", he said wonderingly. "I heard a firefly captain is looking for a new crew", John said. "She is at the bay, probably stays there till tonight" "Hmm...", Fire said as he tought it over. "I might take a look after my diner" The employee came walking in with Fire's breakfast in a packed bag. He gave it to Fire and Fire gave him the money. "See you later John", Fire said as he got his stuff and walked out of the door. "Good luck Hawk", John said and he went back ordering his staff around.
Hawk decided he better take a look now, before others would take his place on that ship. He had searched for a long time, but most ships couldn't compete against his demands. A Firefly class ship was perfect though. He could hire one of the ships shuttle to keep doing his job and in the meantime he could be the ships gunman. He stuffed his breakfast in his mouth and picked up a faster pace.
After a while he finally reached the bay. He immediatly saw which ship John had been talking about. Right in the middle of the row of ships stood a fine Firefly. He smiled, but watch the ship from a distance first. He saw there were already a couple of people hanging around the ship, probably looking for the same thing as he was. Fire licked his lip as he heard the word 'gunman'. "Some competition", Fire said to himself. "Might be fun".
Fire took a gulp from his flask with booze and walked to the ship. He ignored the fight between the three other men and took his chance. "I heard you were looking for a crew", Fire said to the captain. "I am looking for a ship".

His helping manners were doing it again, getting him into trouble. Raising his hands he started to back away from the ramp. The next thing to happen was another body came up to hire on as a gunman. Looking down at himself and then at the new feller, he was looking like the poor cousin of the bunch. Sighing he picked his half gunny sack up and moved to a nearby food stand that was sellin' steamed buns.
He kept his ears open to those at the ramp good fortune was never on his side. Kicking, screaming, and bleeding had been his life since his world ended those many years ago. Never did he like to give up on a fight, but this was not a fight. Work or transportation to anywhere was good for him.
Munching on a steamed roll he unwrapped his long rifle. Other of his weapons were bundled up in it to. The only item he worried about was that rifle. The stall owner looked concern thinking an assassination was about to happen. Thomas looked at the ownere and smiled saying.....
It's not loaded, so no worries. Nothin' round here worth shootin'.
