She stood up when he mentioned beating the money out of Juliet and moved her hand to her pistol. Then Juliet started to talk, angrily she noticed, and she eased up a bit when she said they'd do the job. Her eyes closed in frustration, but she knew there was no other way. She left the room when the man opened the back door. Outside, she turned to Juliet. "So, Ariel it is?"

"I guess so. You don't have to come if you don't want to." Juliet took a few steps down the street before her mouth spread into a smile to bit it almost hurt.
"That idiot! Preston has to be the most foolish, completely brain-fried man I've ever met! Treating his life like it's nothing but a piece of luh-suh just so I can get my ranch..." She shook her head and laughed. "I'm so angry right now! When I see him, I'll slap him twice. Maybe that'll get some wisdom into his brain-pan." She nearly felt like skipping but stopped herself. She wasn't on Ariel yet.
"There's got to be somewhere we can ask about a flight to Ariel. Got any ideas?"

"I told you, I'm with you. I got a notion you're gonna need me anyway," she answered as Juliet went into her tirade about how she was going to slap Preston. She couldn't blame her, she'd be just as angry. "The ports again, best thought I got." This was gonna cost, a trip to Ariel would not be cheap. They may have to do some odd jobs to pay their way, or help on the ship they got on somehow, but she wanted to live on a ship, so maybe they could find one she could stay on after this was done.

"To the ports then," Juliet said. She stuck her hands in the pockets of her jacket and felt the pistol press against her chest. "Do you want your gun back? I just remembered it's still in my pocket."
As they walked, Juliet wondered why they had put the port so far from the city. It might make sense if people had secret dealings they wanted to handle in private, but everyone seemed fine with doing those in the city. Perhaps it was for the quiet; she remembered hearing her father complain about how loud the city they lived near could be if there was a busy day with the ships.

"You should keep it," she answered. "Never know when you'll need it." Better safe than sorry, she thought. She followed as Juliet went towards the ports, she knew they would be going for another ride, and though she was looking forward to it, it wasn't all that intriguing to her that they'd be going towards the core. Still, she wanted to help her friend find her man, she just hated that Juliet would have to jump through all these hoops to do that.

There were a few ships at the ports, and Juliet walked up to the first captain she saw. She wasn't looking forward to being on a ship again, but if it was necessary, she would do it. She was getting used to all sorts of things on this trip, and she might even get used to carrying around a pistol.
"Excuse me," she said to the captain. "Do you know of a ship headed for Ariel?"
"Not that I know of," the captain said slowly. "My ship's making for Santo, and the Bernadette Heavy's going to Persephone... You could ask the Mei Hua. I don't believe her captain's chosen a port yet, and she might be willing to indulge your destination for a little extra."

Damn. She was thinking that to herself the entire time the man was speaking to Juliet. How would they get where they were going? And when they got there, what then? Would it just be the happy reunion she hoped it would be for her friend? It was never that easy, that was the stuff of stories. And stories never came close to truth. She stayed with Juliet the entire time she was talking to the ship captain, and every step of the way moving towards the next ship, and the next, but she was obviously distracted. She wasn't upset with herself for getting involved, like she was about the bar fight on Whitefall, but she couldn't help but wonder if it would become another situation like that somehow. She had been quick to defend herself and her friend while they were on this rock, but she abhorred violence. What was happening to her?

"I'll ask her," Juliet said. She managed to give the man a smile before heading on to the farther ship, the one with the woman standing beside it. After walking a few yards, she slowed a bit and looked at Victoria. The woman hadn't seemed to be herself since they reached the ports, and she felt rather worried. The novelty of worrying about someone didn't distract her much, though.
"Are you all right?" she asked. "Something's wrong, isn't it? Tell me."

She shook her head. "I wouldn't say something's wrong. Just a bit distracted is all. Really hope this all ends well enough for you guys. You've become a good friend. I want the best for you." It was true. She wanted her friend to be happy. "I just hope my issue with trouble finding me doesn't end up hurting you or Preston. If it comes down to it, and there's a gun fight or some sort of brawl, I want you both to drop down and get away," she said with a serious tone in her voice.

Juliet was about to argue, but the tone in Victoria's voice made it clear she wouldn't accept it. She wasn't sure how much good she would be in a fight, anyway. When she got angry, she tended to use words rather than fists. "All right," she said. "Do you think there's going to be any kind of trouble?"
Juliet paused a few feet away from the Mei Hua. She wanted to finish this conversation before arranging any business.

"I hope not," she said with a somber expression. "But trouble has seemed to follow me since the Collins gang thing on Whitefall. She looked around and saw that they were nearing the Mei Hua when Juliet stopped to ask that. She knew why too. It wouldn't do to have one of them raring to go and the other just kind of distant and uncaring. They needed to be a united front here, no secrets held from the captain. Maybe he, she, would help. "Just don't want to see you or your man get hurt is all," she said quickly.

"I don't want us to get hurt either," Juliet said. "But I also don't want you to get hurt, all right? I mean, you've helped me a lot and... I just don't want it to be my fault if something happens to you."
Juliet scuffed the dirt with her shoe and looked at the ship. It looked rather uninteresting, but she didn't need anything flashy. As long as it could get her to Ariel soon, it could look like the worst wreck in the 'Verse. "Ready to go?"

She nodded at her friend's words. She understood everything the girl was saying, and felt the same exact way. She looked at the ship, it did look like a piece of crap, but if it got them from point a to point b it would do. She nodded again. "Let's go do this," she said, trying to smile. And she started towards the ship.

The captain of the Mei Hua was a tough-looking woman with tattoos running up the sides of her face. She looked up from the glove she was mending to glance over Juliet and Victoria. "You two looking for a ride to somewhere those two ain't going?" She jerked her head to the other two ships.
"Yes," Juliet said. "I need to get to Ariel."
"How soon?"
"As soon as possible." Preston wouldn't be dead before she got there. She wouldn't let that happen. If there was a way to change the 'Verse through sheer willpower, she would find a way to keep Preston alive.
"You headed for Ariel, too?" the captain asked. "Either of you ever happened to work a ship before?"

Victoria didn't like the look of the ship's captain, she had a seedy kind of thing going on, but she kept that to herself. "Just once," she answered the woman's question. "On the Sally Ride, they brought us here and we worked the ship a bit in return." She decided it would be best to just be flat out honest and forthright. She waited to see what the woman had to see next.
