"Hm," the captain said, pursing her lips. "There's not much profit in just taking two passengers all the way to Ariel, though I suppose we could pick up a job there. Can either of you cook."
"I can," Juliet said. She usually worked with fresh ingredients from the family's ranch, but during seasons when crops were short or they had to sell their own food because there wasn't enough surplus, she had learned how to work with rations. "If I've got a stove, some water, and a couple herbs, I can make soup out of anything." It wasn't exactly true, but she felt like bragging a little.
"All right," the captain said. "I'm Genny Lee. You'll refer to me as captain on the trip. The younger of you will handle the kitchen, and the older can lend a hand wherever she's needed. Are you at least a quick learner?" she asked Victoria.

"Yep," she answered quickly. She didn't want to seem too eager, and did a good job of hiding the fact that she wasn't too fond of the captain already. But she'd have to deal with it. She didn't like the woman's tone more than anything, but, it was her ship, and she would abide by her rules. This was going to be a long ride, may as well make the best of it.

"Right then," Captain Lee said. "If you two want to grab whatever you'll be taking along, we can head out this afternoon."
Juliet thanked the captain -- she was getting better at being polite -- and headed back for the city to get her things. She had never seen one of the Core planets before, and though she wasn't looking forward to the ride there, she was excited to see something grander than Whitefall. Haven was different, but it wasn't exactly splendid.
"You all right?" she asked Victoria once they were clear of the ports. The woman seemed all right, but something seemed a bit off. "Something not quite shiny?"

She looked at Juliet as they walked back to get their things. She didn't want to worry her with her concerns, but something about that captain didn't sit right. "Not really sure. I may be reading into things too much," she said with a strained smile. "Just something about the captain kinda rubs me the wrong way. It's probably nothing." She started packing up everything when they got back to their room. She checked all her weapons and made sure the clips were full. She was going in with as open of a mind as she could, but she wasn't taking any chances.

Juliet hadn't unpacked much, so all she had to do was double-check her bags before she was ready to go. The captain of the ship had seemed rather unsavory, but then, so did everyone on Haven. She had come to trust Victoria, though, so she would keep her eyes open and be careful on the Mei Hua. It wouldn't hurt to be careful.
When Victoria was finished packing, Juliet asked, "Anything else we need to do before leaving?"

It didn't take her very long to gather her belongings, and she noticed that it took Juliet even less time. She had been the smarter of the two, not unpacking as much. "I can't think of anything else," she answered Juliet's question. "We should probably get back pretty quick like." She looked around the room, despite its smallish size it had been very comfortable. "So what is the first meal you're gonna cook?" she said quickly, trying to change the subject.

"Oh, I don't know. It really depends on what they have. If there's any dried river herring, I know a decent recipe for that." She found herself wondering just how much fresh food was on the ship and if they would happen to have fresh herring. It was unlikely, but she could always hope. Fresh food would make her job a lot easier.
As they headed out of the hotel and down the street, Juliet wondered what it would be like to travel like this, hopping from planet to planet, not know her next destination more than a few days in advance. "Do you like traveling?" she asked.

She shrugged at her friend's answer. "Let's hope they have fresh food then," she giggled a bit. She walked alongside Juliet towards the ship and kept an open, wary eye the entire time. She heard Juliet's next question. "I've enjoyed it so far. I'd never been off Whitefall before. It's kinda nice to see new worlds. I'm pretty excited about seeing Ariel."

"I've heard it's beautiful," Juliet said. "All blue skies and shining streets. Probably half of what I heard is exaggerated, but even if it's only a quarter true, it'll be the best planet I've seen." She would return to Whitefall as soon as she could, but it would be nice to see a Core planet and have something to tell her children some day.
They arrived at the Mei Hua and were given a decent-sized room. Captain Lee said they would leave in an hour, and Juliet found a window to loo out. "Here we go," she whispered. "Preston, you'd damn well better be alive."

She started unpacking a few things, taking a lesson from before, not to unpack so much. She giggled a bit to herself when she thought about that. "I've heard the same. Maybe for once the gossips are true." She looked out the window with Juliet and put her hand on her shoulder. "We'll find him," she assured her.
