One decision, one little personality change, can change the course of history...
Twenty years ago Valentine Morgenstern's story really began when he, his special friend Jocelyn and his best friend Luke were at the Academy together. Valentine was extremely patriotic for Idris and Shadowhunters. He certainly wasn't keen on Downworlder's but he didn't actually hate them. He just didn't bother with them. After his father was killed by a werewolf, Valentine went through an angry period and talked of creating a circle of members devoted to purging the world of Downworlders. However Jocelyn and Luke talked him out of it and that he had the right to go after the one who killed his father but other Downworlders didn't deserve to suffer. Reluctantly he let it go. He graduated the Academy with Jocelyn having formed a relationship with her. They became engaged shortly after graduation and married within months.
Valentine was a talented Shadowhunter and so earned a place in the Clave for his talents. The Clave were arranging the next Accords between Shadowhunters and Downworlders for two years time. It was a time of peace, with some demon activity but nothing that the Nephilim could not handle. More stories of success filled the people of Idris with patriotic hearts. Their children were continually trained in case they ever needed to fight. Being Shadowhunters they thought very little of the harshness of training children to fight.
Valentine was barely nineteen years old when Jocelyn told him she was pregnant. The pair of them were delighted and Valentine began some unusual experiments to protect his child. One of his successful ones was to dose up his pregnant wife with angel's blood so that both mother and child would be strong. Jocelyn gave him a son months later. They named him Johnathan Christopher Morgenstern and he was quite the lovely child. He was the apple of his parents eye. But his first year was filled with drama. Within months of Johnathan's birth, Stephen Herondale, a friend of Valentine was killed by a Forsaken. Celine, his wife, was so devastated that she killed herself. Valentine barely managed to rescue her child by cutting him from the room. He gave him to Michael Wayland to raise who named him Jace.
More trouble arose just after Jocelyn announced her second pregnancy. The amount of demons coming through the dimensions increased and they were targeting Shadowhunters. Rumours of a renegade Shadowhunter leading them reached the ears of the Clave and an almighty battle took place. False news reached Jocelyn and Luke that Valentine had been killed, they rushed to the Clave to find out. During which time Valentine returned to the house, being pursued by the renegade Shadowhunter and his gang, he took Johnathan Christopher who was being guarded by his maid and he went to find Michael Wayland to ask him to look after his son so he could divert attention from Johnathan, only to find Michael dead. Valentine reluctantly took Jace with him too and fled with the boys, too preoccupied to think of his wife and unborn daughter. Jocelyn returned to the house to find her son gone and a rumour spread around that he had been killed too. Devastated Jocelyn and Luke fled Idris to the mundane world. They left behind the conflict for what was meant to be forever.
Once the demons had been exterminated and the conflict crisis, resolved the Lightwoods and Penhallows were suspected of being involved with the renegade gang by the recovering Clave and questioned for ages but eventually it was conceded with proof that they had not been part of the conspiracy. Instead the Lightwoods were asked to safeguard the Institute in New York and the Penhallows were allowed to stay in Idris but they had to take more responsibility around the place to prove their loyalty.
Now sixteen years on...
Clary Morgenstern has been brought up a Mundane with Luke as her uncle. Jocelyn is trying to live a life away from the Shadowhunters.
Valentine and Johnathan are still missing somewhere but they are presumed dead.
As for Jace, he was given to the Lightwoods when he was ten years old since at the time Valentine wasn't able to protect both of the boys and he preferred to keep his biological son beside him.. He had faked his own death so Jace would think himself orphaned rather than abandoned. It was a rare kindness that Valentine did him.
The Lightwoods are still living in New York and their children along with Jace continue the demon hunting under the special tutoring of Hodge Starkweather, a friend of the Lightwoods who helps give wisdom to the children and sometimes takes them on field trips to Idris.
Magnus Bane was still asked to put the block on Clary's mind to prevent her from knowing about the supernatural world.
Demons are coming through again and the Accords are about to happen
The renegade Shadowhunters are still out there
