Serenity View Township, Hera; Feburary 19th 2523
It was the day after the crew had returned James to the family and he was burried. Things were far from normal with the crew and the ship. Even with all the repairs Kalli was going to have her work cut out for her. Tari was doing a lot better but still recovering and Sid well he was still his normal cold self maybe a bit more so even now. Art, well he had his own business to attend to and with James gone his tie to the ship wasn't enough to keep him there.
He had seen it through that James was given the proper rites he deserved and now it was time for the trinity to rise again. Sidney was now in charge, and Roger had become his trusted second. They were taking the day to get ready, some of them gathering the supplies they need and others attending to the ship. Sidney had set out to get them a new crew memeber for the ship. They could use another stong gun after losing James and Art. Not to mention Kalli was still in no condition to take up arms if they needed it, and who knows if she will ever be ready again.
Sidney had been having no real luck with it anf had stopped by the bar for a few drinks. He sat down at the bar, lit a cigarette and ordered a drink. He could afford an hour or so to himself before returning to the task at hand.

Tristram payed little attention to the man who had just seated himself a few stools down. The man lit a cigarette and said something to the bartender, nothing out of the ordinary. He grabbed his drink and stood up, preparing to leave. As he turned, his lack of balance caused him to splash a large man adjacent to him. The now soggy man jumped back with a shout of surprise. "Oi, watch yourself!" Tristram looked at the angry patron. As he took a drink, he noticed that the front of the man's pants were wet. He held back the laugh until he swallowed, then set his drink down on the bar and began to laugh. This enraged the man further, and he started toward Tristram, only to have a pistol pointed at his face. "Now why..." Tristram began seriously, "would you want to do a thing like that?" He started laughing again, unable to contain himself any longer. He swayed as he kept the gun trained on the brute. The man snarled. "You're so drunk, you can't hit nothin'." He slowly pulled a knife. "In fact, you're probably seeing double." He took another step toward the smaller man. Tristram pulled another pistol. "I have two guns," he said, flashing a smile, "one for each of ya." The big man stepped forward again, so Tristram shot him in his knife arm. Ignoring the wounded man's screams and vows of revenge, the young man holstered his weapons and finished his drink. He motioned for the barkeep. "I'll take my things, John." The bartender brought over a sawed off shotgun and a rifle and handed them over. Tristram slid the shotgun into a custom holster on his right thigh, and the rifle into a scabbard on his back. He tossed a bag of money at the barkeep. "That should cover my tab." With that, he swayed out of the bar and into the streets. Tristram's Outfit

Sidney sat there and enjoyed his drink for a bit and watched as the young fellow made a fool of himself, but also showed is skill. The man was reckless and stupid about how he dealt with people and it was very apparent that he was a piss poor drunk. Just the kind of person you didn't want to deal with on a regular bases.
The man stumbled out of the bar sure to end up in another fight and most likely behind local law enforcements cell bars. Sidney finessed his drink and stubbed out his cigarette so he could follow the man. He stood up and walked out of the bar behind the man.
Sidney followed him down the road just a little bit before he caught up to him. "You always this drunk and reckless or is this some sort of special occasion?" He asked the man as he walked along side him, very so often propping him back up to his feel as he stumbled in Sidney's direction. At this point Sidny didn't really care who he found just someone good with a gun and able to cause trouble when trouble was needed.

Tristram laughed at the question. "Sir, I have not yet begun to defile myself." He pulled out a flask and took a drink. "I like to enjoy m'self ev'ry now and then. This's the best way I know how." He offered the man the flask. "But unless I can get some steady work, I'm gonna hafta find another way to have some fun." He laughed again. "And seein' as I don't have many marketable skills, findin' honest work is hard." Tristram fixed a suspender. "Not that it has to be honest," he added with a grin.
As he continued to stagger down the street, a desheveled man bumped into Tristram roughly. In the blink of an eye, Tristram had the stranger in an elbow lock, pistol pointed at his head. "Have you ever seen what a bullet can do to a man's head at close range?" The stranger shook his head, unsettled by the humor in Tristram's voice. Tristram laughed. "I'll spare you the gruesome details, but let's just say if you don't give me my money back, I'll introduce your face to the back of your head."
Using his free arm, the stranger tossed a small black pouch at Tristram's feet. With a shove Tristram sent the stranger on his way, and once he regained his balance, he picked up the pouch and holstered the gun. He smiled as he watched the would be thief shrink into the distance."Ruttin' thief. Watch he'll try again in five... four... three... two..." Before he could finish, the thief plowed into someone else. Tristram turned to his new companion. "I don't think I've introduced myself. Tristram Kelly." He extended his hand.

Six maybe seven weeks and Roger was already First Mate of the Trinity. It's not exactly how he would have liked to reach the position, through death and an exodus of crew members, but he wasn't about to turn down the post. James was in the ground, the proper ceremonies having been preformed, and now the Trinity was back in action and ready for business. Well... almost.
The ship had been repaired and had obviously flown well enough to get them off of New Canaan but the crew was still a bit short handed and pretty depleted in terms of supplies. Everyone had been sent off on their own for their specialty, using the payday from Rider to cover the costs. Sidney was hiring personnel, Sakura was restocking medical supplies, and so on. Roger had been out getting the various personal and the communal armories all restocked and even improved a bit. They had gone through three major battles in a row and the stockpile was near empty so Roger hit up just about every trader and arms dealer in town and near cleaned them out of whatever they had that matched something on board the Trinity. That earlier catalog he'd made of weapons, equipment, and ammo had come in handy for this job.
With anything worth having already bought and either delivered to Trinity or on its way, Roger set off in search of Sidney to report but also to relax. The new captain was obviously in a bar looking for new hires. It is pretty standard for those looking for work to hang out in such a place but Sidney isn't exactly the best with words. He's more the type to watch for opportunity to present itself than to actively talk others up and see who wants a job. At least that was Roger's experience from the short time with the man. Sidney lived a charmed life though. It seemed he always just ran into what he needed. With his luck someone would present themselves on a silver platter in front of him just like Roger had drawn his weapon at their first meeting when Sidney was looking for a gunhand.
Roger had no luck at the first bar he tried but soon he spied Sidney leaving a second one. Sidney was a man on a mission, following and then conversing with a heavily armed and clearly inebriated man walking away from the same bar. Roger took his time in closing the distance and catching up to his captain. In the meanwhile, he observed as the potential hire stopped a would-be pickpocket. Impressive for a man who can't walk a straight line. The thief hadn't learned his lesson and tried the same trick on Roger as the two approached one another. Roger wouldn't let him go with just a threat and a warning. As the collision occurred, Roger already had his pistol drawn and fired into the man's foot causing him to drop the stolen item in his agony. Maybe that lesson would be a little more lasting.

Sidney listened as the drunkard stumbbled along and talked. He apperently was in need of work and luckily Sidney was in need of someone to do some work. As they stumbbled along her heard a shot fired from behind them and turned to see Roger as well had dealt with the same pickpocket that Tristram had dealt with seconds before. It seemed the drunk not only could handle his own but had a nack for knowing how people would act.
When the man finally introduced himself sidney replied. "Well Tristram I am Sidney. Captain of the firefly-Class transport the Trinity. Seems you need work and I need crew. Whadaya say we figured something out." He was trying his luck with being straight to the point with the man.
It wasn't but a few seconds latter that roger caught up with them. "Roger I'd like to introduce you to Tristram, a new crew member if he can sober up long enough to agree to the concept." Yeah Sidney was sure Roger would question the idea of a drunk on the ship. Honestly so would Sidney but he wanted to get an extra gun on the ship with their recently depleted crew. If nothing else they would leave him behind in a druken stuper at the next stop if he didn't work out.

Sidney of course had been getting right to the point. He was never subtle and he often came across as too forward, desperate even. Hopefully Tristram wouldn't catch on to that in his current state.
"You're pretty skilled when you're drunk. I'd like to see how well you can preform when sober." Roger said after he was introduced.
"So, other than point you guns at thieves, what's your story? Trinity ain't exactly the kinda ship for everyone and it's best if we find out now rather than up in the black." By that of course Roger was trying to search for baggage that came along with the kid. Sidney may have acted like they'd take in any stray without learning a bit of their story but Roger saw that as a major liability. His own hiring several weeks back had surprised him at the speed of it all and the instant trust Sidney was prone to give. Hell, this kid could be some diehard Alliance brat for all they knew, unlikely as it was.

Tristram had jumped a bit at the sound of the gunshot, but he quickly regained what compsure he had left. The man at his side introduced himself and said he was the captain of some ship. Then this Sidney fellow offered him a job. Tristram began to accept as soon as the offer left Sidney's mouth, but was cut short by the approach of the man who just shot the pickpocket.
His hand was halfway to his pistol when Sidney greeted the man and introduced him. Roger, as he was called, seemed slightly impressed. Of course, that could just be the alcohol.
"You're pretty skilled when you're drunk. I'd like to see how well you can preform when sober."
Tristram smiled at the compliment. "I'm better when I'm drunk."
"So, other than point you guns at thieves, what's your story? Trinity ain't exactly the kinda ship for everyone and it's best if we find out now rather than up in the black."
Tristram scrunched up his face as he thought. "Well," he began, "I grew up on Persephone, my dad fought for the Independents, tried to learn mechanics, failed, dad taught me how to shoot, and I am a very good shot, got some jobs as a gunhand, but nothing steady, and I've been stuck on this rock since the last job." He counted off on his fingers as he reached every point. When he finished, he laughed and shrugged, and then hooked his thumbs in his pockets.
He turned back to Sidney. "So... about this job. What would you have me do?"

Sidney was glad to see Roger had caught up with them he could use someone who was a bit better with words, someone who could manage to say what needed to be said. Sidney was always to straight forward about thing but he hated talking so much that he woudl rather skip all the unneeded talk and get to the point.
Sidney looked over to roger as Tristram talked about his past. WHen he got to the point that he was inquiring about the job and what he would be doing. Sidney looked to Roger. "Care to fill him in Roger" He was going to leave this one to Roger to figure out what to do with. The kid had skill that was for sure but if they could use it was still a question. He would need to be able to be sober when needed. Sidney continued to escort the man now taking him in the direction on the Trinity so they could bring him aboard. If Roger decided he wasn't in fovor they could always just let him drift his own way as they made it back to the ship.

Tristram's response was about what Roger had expected. He was more the adventuring type, didn't really have any marketable skills other than fighting, learned from his folks at a young age... stripped of the details he even sounded a bit like Roger. The difference was the 11 years experience he had over the kid. The only real notable thing from the short background was the bit about his father being a war vet. It certainly wasn't the same as if the kid had fought but it showed that he was of good stock and his apparent respect for his father was a good sign that even if the son was no Independent then he wasn't an Alliance sympathizer either.
Of course it could also be a big lie tailored to fit them and get him on the ship. That was Roger, always looking out for the trap no matter how unlikely. Tristram was genuinely drunk though and this was all just a chance encounter. The odds of a plant were infinitesimally small.
"Well, I figure we can find somethin' for a young man with an itchy trigger finger to do. It'll be typical gunhand work backin' up Sidney and myself." Roger said, taking over for Sid. "You might expect to hear a few stories that coincide with those of your pa's from time to time and we'll also be sure to keep you away from the engine room." That last bit was in reference to Tristram's admitted lack of mechanical skill but also a caution to keep him away from Kalli if he didn't want to be killed by Sid.
"I hate to be blunt about this but we also gotta know if your drinkin' is gonna be a problem? The Trinity ain't a dry ship or nothin' but we need to know we can count on you to be sober and ready to work when needed."

"Back up... I can handle that." Tristram pulled his flask back out and took a drink. "And my trigger finger could use a good workout."
"I hate to be blunt about this but we also gotta know if your drinkin' is gonna be a problem? The Trinity ain't a dry ship or nothin' but we need to know we can count on you to be sober and ready to work when needed."
Tristram looked at his flask, took another drink, and tossed it over his shoulder. It made a 'tink' as it hit the street behind him. "No sir. Not at all." They continued walking down the road, Tristram occasionally pinballing off Sidney and Roger. "As far as the engine room, I will steer well clear of that." He chuckled. "So what can you tell me about yourselves and the crew? I wouldn't mind knowing the kind of folk I'll be working with."

Sidney Roger and Tristram continued to walk down the path threw Serentiy View until thay got to the Trinity. "Well here she is. The Trinity, she ain't much to look at but she gets up in to the shys and thats about all we can ask right." He escorted Tristram up to the ramp and on to the ship.
Once they were on board Sidney took a seat on one of the creates. The rest of the crew should either be on board or on their way back from gathering up the things they needed. "So what are your resevations. What won't you do when push comes to shove." Sindey found it important to know what a person was willing to do. It is best to know these things up front instead of finding them out in the heat of battle or whatever. Sideny, well he had pretty much no reservations but he knew damn well that everyone else had their limits.

"So what are your resevations. What won't you do when push comes to shove."
Tristram laughed. "I'm barely scraping by right now. I don't have the luxury of reservations. If I have to fight, I'll fight. If I have to kill, I'll kill. I don't want to kill, but I will not hesitate to throw iron." In a rare moment of sincerity, he fingered the pistol on his thigh. "Sir, I might not seem like much, but I'm your man. If you give me this chance, I won't let you down." He looked back and forth between Roger and Sidney, his normally laughter filled eyes now gleaming with earnest determination.

Roger couldn't help but smile when Tristram tossed the flask away. The kid had a sense of humor if nothing else. The ship could use a more upbeat personality especially with the loss they had recently experienced. The ship really only had one 'warm' personality in Meilin, Kalli having become significantly less cheerful of late and for good reason.
"Well, the captain and I are war vets as is our medic." Roger replied to Tristram's question. "Browncoats of course, like your father. Other than that there ain't really much to tell ya that ya won't be able to find out when ya meet 'em for yerself. No major baggage at least that I know of. We got a pilot, mostly keeps to herself as long as I've been aboard, a skilled mechanic, and a great cook." Roger left Tari out, not knowing what to call her and figuring 'passenger' wasn't going to cut it anymore.
"As far as my history goes, I was about yer age when the war ended. I was raised on a farm before all that, never was really able to get back into it or find work elsewhere." Roger stopped his little biographical speech there. He didn't want to drive the kid off by continuing to make connections between himself and Tristram who he'd only met moments ago. A propensity for getting in fights, skilled in weapons and little else, desperate for work and to get off world on a ship... any ship. 'Well here's your future, kid, if you're lucky enough to survive this long in the business.'
By now they'd reached Trinity. In some ways she looked better than before but in others she looked much worse. Some parts were brand new having been replaced, others that still functioned remained. Those scars told the story of Trinity getting shot from the sky and plummeting to hard earth below. If not for the sentimental loss it might have been better to buy a whole new ship.
Sidney began to take over the interview again, not that there was really any question in hiring Tristram now. He asked about any reservations the kid might have when fighting, a reasonable question but one Roger had decided not to ask. Tristram wouldn't be offering himself as a gunhand without being willing to kill. Maybe he'd hesitate in the heat of the moment but right now it's not like he'd say "No I won't kill." In addition to that, Roger never specifically intended to ask him to do anything that would require more hesitation than whether to shoot or not.
Roger was a killer, sure. He'd killed hundreds in the war and since but he was no murderer. Some folks just needed killing, like those slavers back on New Canaan. But as far as Roger could tell, Sidney wasn't tied to as strict a code as he was. The major probably wasn't one to take prisoners back in the war and even now he probably harbored a grudge against the Alliance. Roger of course didn't like them but wasn't about to go off on some vendetta mission. Even during the war he understood that the soldiers on the other side of the line were the same as him, just born some place else and thus fighting for the other side. Kill them if you gotta but that's it. The Alliance may be some evil entity trying to control the 'verse but that doesn't make all the people inside it evil.

Tari was still in the middle of healing and what-not. Her arm was staying in a sling for the most part so she was a little restricted on what she could wear. Though she'd had to ask for help a few times with some things. Today though she'd been able to pull it off on her own, since her top only had one sleeve and all. Her hair was left down after having a brush run through it a few times. The thief was getting tired of not being able to do things, but she still had a ways to go before her arm was back to normal. Everyday she'd been wearing the necklace that Sid had given her, well it'd been left on really. Easier than having to get help to take it off and put back on a daily basis. Tari had found some earrings that matched perfectly during their time on Hera, it took a little more time than normal to acquire them. She was out of practice and lacking full use of her arm of course. It helped quell her need to steal though, for now at least. Art was gone, leaving without telling anyone goodbye - aside from a note. Which didn't really count to her. of course she had been no better, nearly leaving during the middle of the night herself; no note from her. Sidney had stopped her from going though, which she was thankful for. Really she couldn't hold it against him, at least he had the decency to leave the crew a note. It was more than she had planned. So they had lost James, then Cadan and Layla, now Art. Which left Sid in charge with Roger close behind in the ranks. Tari's position was still...unclear. She was a thief, a con-artist. Speaking of the new Captain, he had gone out to try and russle up some new crew. Which he should have waited for Tari to go along, since he was not good with the talking to people part. Hearing voices coming from the cargo-bay Tari headed out of her room, stopping on the catwalk; leaning over to see Sid, Roger and a new guy. "So even though ya leave me behind you still got someone huh Sid, guess you been practicing." Tari was only teasing him of course, ever since he'd kept her from leaving she felt a bit closer to him. Talking to him more than she had been before. "He's a handsome one though, I applaud ya. So..do we get to keep him?" The thief said with a smile and a wink to the new-comer. She might still have her arm in a sling and dealing with the pain, but like her thieving; the flirting didn't cease. ---------------- Outfit
